Having studied at Leeds College of Art and the Anglo-French Art Centre, Schottlander's creations are an extension of his love and skill of sculpture.
As an admirer of Alexander Calder - the inventor of the mobile - Schottlander created the Mantis series of lamps in 1951.
Movement is intrinsic to all of Schottlander’s work: an artist, an engineer and in no small measure a handyman, he devised a clever system of counterweights combined with a series of strong, and flexible metal bars.
Schottlander also brought his sculptor's eye to the highly unique lampshade, creating a helical movement that adds to the ethereal nature of these pieces.
