7 Tips for Planning Your Perfect Outdoor Dinner Party

2 min read

With the nights still long and the weather warm and balmy, now is the perfect time to utilise your outdoor space for entertaining family and friends. Whether planning a casual gathering or a fancier affair, here are some helpful tips on how to be the hostess with the mostest.

1. Choose a Theme
Dinner parties are the perfect opportunity to entertain friends and family over a nice meal, especially when the weather is beautiful. Choosing a theme will make your dinner party shine a bit brighter and help you establish a direction for your decor. Take inspiration from your favourite styles and use this as a starting point.

2. Set the Date
Choose a date that works best for you and will likely work for your guests' schedules. Weekends or early weeknights are perfect times to plan for.  Australia is known for its beautiful long summers, so you won't have to worry about it getting too dark too early.

Even in the warmer months rain is a possibility, so keep a close eye on the weather and have a backup plan.

3. Guest List & Invitations
Once you've chosen a date, it’s time to compile a list of who'll be attending. Be mindful of the size of your outdoor space and be sure to invite an appropriate number of people. If you want to host something casual and relaxed more people is fine, but aim to keep the guest list small for something intimate and slightly more formal.

Create your dinner party event online so that your guests can digitally rsvp. This will help you stay organised which is critical when planning an event no matter the size. In your invitation be sure to ask each guest to provide you with any dietary restrictions or food allergies, as this will be an important part of planning your menu.

4. Seating
To maximise comfort and style, invest in beautiful outdoor furniture that will last and withstand all seasons. This could be a dining table, dining chairs or even a couple of sun loungers. Whatever you choose, you want your guests to be as comfortable as possible so that they stick around for your entire shindig.

5. Stylish Accents
Keep decor simple and elegant. Fresh flowers, tea lights and beautiful tableware are all perfect for setting the mood.

6. Food
Now that summer is in full swing, get inspired to cook seasonal dishes that make the most of delicious summer produce, such as zucchini, tomatoes, berries and mango. And of course no outdoor Australian dinner party would be complete without fresh seafood.

7. Entertainment
If you're planning a stand up party, encourage your guests to mingle by setting up different food and drink stations throughout your space. These are not only fun for guests, but will also take the stress out of your evening so you can relax and enjoy yourself.
