Simple Style Update: How to Mix & Match Your Cushions

Nothing says comfort quite like a large pile of throw pillows to sink yourself into after a long day. Whether placed at the head of your bed, nestled on your couch, or strewn artfully on a bedroom bench, a new set of cushions are a simple way to inject new style into your interiors.

Mixing and matching your cushions allows you to be creative and playful with your style, which is really what it's all about! With so many colours, shapes and fabrics available, it can be difficult to know which go with what, so here's our foolproof guide to mixing and matching the perfect collection of cushions.

 1. Add Colour

If you have a relatively neutral colour scheme in your room, choose two or three colours which compliment the neutrals but will also inject colour to the space. This will add interest and brighten your room considerably.

If you already have colours in the room (your walls, a rug or bedding, for example) draw from these and work them into your cushion colour palette. And remember to choose colours that compliment the kind of atmosphere you'd like to create.

2. Pick Your Patterns Wisely

Mix and match two to three different patterns in the same colour family. If you're not sure where to start, here are a few ways to do that:

  • One floral + one geometric + one solid
  • One buffalo check + one toile + one ticking stripe
  • One chevron + one dotted + one knit

It's important to think of the scale of your patterns because you don't want them to compete with each other. Instead, choose patterns in various sizes, allowing one pattern to be dominant.

3. Touch-Worthy Textures

Don't be afraid to mix up your textures. A combination of silk, velvet, faux fur, knitted wool and linen will keep your home looking cosy yet modern. If you keep your colour palette and patterns consistent, you can get creative with touch and feel.

Final Tips

When it comes to creating balance, remember that an odd number of cushions looks modern, while an even number is more traditional, making the look clean and symmetrical.

And remember, cushions are supposed to be comfortable, no matter where they're placed. Make sure they're stuffed with filling that will give you a cosy place to rest your weary head after a long day.
